Happy Elephant Sanctuary (Thailand, Day 3)

Our third and final full day in Chiang Mai we spent at the Happy Elephant Sanctuary. This is a sort of rescue center for elephants that have been mistreated or misused in the past. Unlike the other elephant programs in the area that advertise riding the elephants, this one emphasized us taking care of the animals. We got bananas, banana trees and sugar cane and fed it to them, and generally took care of them rather than them being there for our entertainment. The first thing the native volunteers did when we arrived was write our names on our hands in Thai so they could remember what to call us. First, they gave us special clothes to wear. These clothes have scents that the elephants are very used to and recognize so they don't have to take time introducing us as strangers and making sure the elephants will be okay with us. Day trip to Daegu

Daegu is the 4th largest city in Korea and only a 20 min KTX ride north of Ulsan. (of course it takes an hour and a half for me to GET to the KTX station...) One Sunday, a giant group of us decided to take a day trip to the giant city to go zip-lining at a ropes course that one in the group had heard good things about. The time we were here was the peak of fall colors in the area and everything was gorgeous, not to mention the perfect fall temperature. It was chilly, but just enough that a sweater was enough to keep you warm: my favorite kind of weather. The park was called Herb Hillz (yes, with a 'z') and it included many aspects in addition to the suspended ropes course including tons of gardens, a small zoo and a small amusement park.   Before we were allowed up in the trees, they had us go through a little practice course that was a few feet off the ground. Korean Baseball Games

Now that spring is here, one of the fantastic must-have experiences in Korea was a baseball game. And, wow, are they exciting! It's nothing like baseball games I've been to in America. First off, you're allowed to bring in whatever kind of beer and food you want - no having to settle for gross and ridiculously overpriced beer! Secondly is the ambiance. Each side has one of these stages with several dancers and an announcer. The home team gets to advertise theirs on the big screen, but each team is equally loud. They cheer and sing and dance through almost the ENTIRE game. When your team is up to bat, the whole crowd (on that side that is rooting for them) stands and chants, sings and does hand motions all lead by the announcer and the dancers. In this particular game our team, the LG Twins, was losing by quite a bit. But even in the last inning, no one failed to cheer their hearts out at the top of their lungs.
