Day Trip to Busan

The weekend after New Years, Andrew, Shane, and I decided to take a day trip to Busan. After looking up several things to possibly do there, we decided to go to Taejongdae Park (태종대 공원), which is on an island to the southwest of the city called Yeongdo (영도). We took bus 1127 from Ulsan (that goes almost all the way to may apartment) to the subway station on the northeast side of Busan. It only took about an hour and a half. From there we took a 45 minute subway ride to the island on the south of the city and walked across the bridge. The coast and harbor was filled with more boats than you could possibly count, and in the sky line of the city you could see all the cranes as evidence of  the constant construction. The weather was gorgeous and sunny. Eventually it got so warm that we were able to take of our coats. New Year's Eve and the First Sunrise

We kicked off New Year's Eve with dinner at an Indian restaurant in downtown Ulsan. After eating and having a few beers, we headed to Ulsan Grand Park to see the midnight performance countdown and fireworks. Being on the east coast of Korea and being on of the first time zones to experience the New Year, it is a very common activity to watch the first sunrise "of the world" at the beach just 30 minutes south of the city. After hanging out at a bar until about 3am, we took the public buses from the park to the beach and began the long, cold wait to morning. Near the beach they had two giant tents set up, with chairs and heaters inside. One of them had a movie playing, but was already packed when we arrived, so we went to the other one and huddled around a heater to keep warm. Happy Elephant Sanctuary (Thailand, Day 3)

Our third and final full day in Chiang Mai we spent at the Happy Elephant Sanctuary. This is a sort of rescue center for elephants that have been mistreated or misused in the past. Unlike the other elephant programs in the area that advertise riding the elephants, this one emphasized us taking care of the animals. We got bananas, banana trees and sugar cane and fed it to them, and generally took care of them rather than them being there for our entertainment. The first thing the native volunteers did when we arrived was write our names on our hands in Thai so they could remember what to call us. First, they gave us special clothes to wear. These clothes have scents that the elephants are very used to and recognize so they don't have to take time introducing us as strangers and making sure the elephants will be okay with us.
